“Faces are the most interesting things we see; other people fascinate me, and the most interesting aspect of other people—the point where we go inside them—is the face. It tells all.” - David Hockney

Riverside CA – The Riverside Art Museum (RAM) announces the opening of REVEALING CHARACTER: Four Hundred Years of Portraits at the Riverside Art Museum. The exhibition runs from September 24 to December 28, 2011 with a special reception Saturday, October 8, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. for RAM members and a general public reception from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. with $5 admission for non-members.

The second in a series of three exhibits mined from RAM’s Permanent Collection, Revealing Character celebrates nearly four centuries of portraiture, with artwork dating from the seventeenth century to the present. New York-based Guest Curator Margaret Mathews-Berenson has delved into RAM’s collection and presents forty-seven works by thirty-three notable artists, including: Jacques Callot, Marc Chagall, Salvador Dalí, Alberto Giacometti, Takashi Murakami, and Kara Walker.

Revealing Character serves as a brief survey of the history of portraiture and includes work by local artists; among these are: Joanna Mersereau and O. Walter Donnenfeld of Riverside, and Leo Limón and Sergio Zenteno Bencomo of East Los Angeles’ Self Help Graphics, a community arts collective that supports emerging artists in Latino and marginalized communities in Los Angeles and beyond. Peppering the walls of the galleries are poignant quotes by well-known artists and writers, including: Charles Baudelaire, Lucian Freud, Vincent Van Gogh, Frida Kahlo, and Oscar Wilde.

To add yet another layer of interest to the exhibition, Mathews-Berenson has connected for the second time with Creative Writing interns from UC Riverside to create an on-demand book to accompany the exhibit. In addition to a supplementary essay and selected full-color images, Revealing Character’s companion book contains original writings by six UCR students inspired by works on view and will be available for purchase at the museum. Striking, informative, and diverse, Revealing Character proves to be a unique museum experience.

RAM relies on the generosity of members and donors to support its exhibitions, education programs, and special events. A 50-plus-year-old, private, non-profit cultural arts institution housed in a National Historic 1929 building designed by Hearst Castle architect Julia Morgan, the museum welcomes over 50,000 visitors a year. The museum is open Monday – Saturday, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. For information on exhibits, events, classes, memberships, or sponsorship opportunities, visit www.RiversideArtMuseum.org. Their textured, worn, or melted surfaces wear the remains of physical activity like dirty laundry left on the floor. The bags attempt to redress their impoverished status with the addition of colorful embroidery in geometric patterns.” Blackwell hopes that by, “contrasting ‘artificial’ plastic with ‘natural’ yarn, the work questions the economies of waste and necessity.”

Sharing gallery space with Roger White, both of these artists stretch the imaginary limits of common objects. The exhibition runs from July 2 to September 22, 2011. The opening reception for this exhibit and three others is July 15 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Josh Blackwell and Roger White have had numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout the world. Blackwell has had solo exhibitions at Kate Macgarry, London, Rachel Uffner Gallery in New York, and Mary Goldman Gallery in Los Angeles. He currently teaches at the School of Visual Arts, New York, and is represented by Kate Macgarry in London and John Tevis Gallery in Paris. White has recently presented his works in exhibitions at the Mitchell-Innes & Nash and Friedrich Petzel galleries, both in New York, and had a solo exhibition of his works at Rachel Uffner Gallery, New York in 2010. He is represented by Rachel Uffner. He currently teaches at the Rhode Island School of Design.

This annual event puts RAM’s abundant and talented artist-member demographic front and center with the opportunity to display and sell an original piece of their choice. Last year’s Members’ Mini Exhibition celebrated pieces small in stature, but big in spirit. This year, with a whopping 110 pieces and an even larger gallery space to boot, artists are given ‘free reign’ with an open media, open-in-theme exhibition.
Riverside CA – The Riverside Art Museum (RAM) announces the opening of Josh Blackwell/Roger White, an exhibition of recent works by two artists stretching the imaginary limits of common objects, from Blackwell’s repurposing of everyday detritus into artistic tableaus, to White’s paintings and works on paper that read like uncanny portraits of inanimate things. The exhibition runs from July 12 to September 22, 2011. The opening reception for this exhibit and three others is July 15 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. In this exhibition, Blackwell presents an installation of a theme he has furtively investigated since the middle 2000s: the unassuming plastic bag as an art object. Utilitarian and easily recognizable, the bag in itself has a short shelf-life in common use, often used once and rendered as trash. By intricately embroidering patterns and swaths of color onto the plastic bags, Blackwell changes the merit of how we perceive them, and the basis of what differentiates objects from being seen as either low or high culture. Often repetitious in pattern and vibrant in palette, these works emphasize their ragtag appearance as humble remarks against the formal limits of minimalism.

Often repetitious in pattern and vibrant in palette, these works emphasize their ragtag appearance as humble remarks against the formal limits of minimalism.

White presents a series of recent paintings and works on paper for the exhibition that embraces a similar ethic of subtlety and choice. Throughout his career, White’s work has been an ongoing address to the limits and possibilities of rendering an object as a finished image. Often no more than the objects readily available around him (a dress shirt, a Brita water filter, or the sun), the images blur the line between the heft of physicality and the colors White uses, creating a middle ground of abstractive vagueness to explore. White will be presented in the exhibition by six new paintings focusing around patterns and common objects, as well as four watercolors produced within the past two years.
