San Bernardino County Museum curators will lead two field trips for the public during March: one to an ancient Ice Age lake and the other to a prehistoric archaeological site, both in the central Mojave Desert. Registration is now open for both excursions.
Senior Curator Kathleen Springer, Curator of Paleontology Eric Scott, and Curator of Geology J. Chris Sagebiel will host “March Manix Madness” on Saturday, March 20. This trip to the central Mojave Desert will explore the shorelines of Ice Age Lake Manix and visit Afton Canyon to investigate where, when, and how the huge prehistoric lake drained away many thousands of years ago. The one-day trip costs $60/person for members of the Museum Association and $70/person for non-members. The fee includes transportation, morning coffee, lunch, and snacks.
On Saturday, March 27, Adella Schroth, curator of anthropology, will head up an excursion to the world-famous Calico Early Man Site near Yermo. Participants will walk the trails around the site, learn its history, and discuss the controversy surrounding the “dig” and its relationship to early human occupation in North America. There will even be opportunities to join in active archaeological excavation in one of the site’s pits. The cost of $40/person ($50/person non-member) includes snacks and transportation.
Reservations forms for both trips can be found on the museum’s website at
www.sbcountymuseum.org, or register by calling Melissa Sanchez at the Museum Association, (909) 307-2669 ext. 250.
