Brithinee Electric Launches Motor/Environment Initiative

Electric motors use an astounding 63% of all industrial power, and are the largest single end use in the US economy. To highlight how motors can save energy, Brithinee Electric launched its first Motor/Environmental Initiative at the Business Press- Inland Empire Economic Briefing, on Tuesday April 4th, in Ontario, California. The initiative is focused on educating financial decision makers on how much energy can be saved through informed motor decisions.

Brithinee Electric is a full industrial motor resource for new or repaired motors and generators, as well as customized motor control systems.

The Economic Briefing was used as a venue because the attendees are generally upper management, economic development, and public officials who make long-term energy decisions. The US Department of Energy says that the level of knowledge and implementation of a systematic approach to motor efficiency is low.

With over 40 years of experience in all aspects of electric motors, Brithinee Electric well understands the practical issues of how motor buying and repair decisions are made. The Brithinee Motor/Environmental Initiative seeks to better educate decision makers on how lower energy usage and more efficient motor operation can reduce CO2 and other emissions.

Better motor energy management could result in a potential greenhouse emissions savings of 15 to 26 million metric tons of carbon per year. These savings are equivalent to removing over 3,200,000 cars from the road!

One such issue is the use of premium efficiency motors instead of standard motors, which operate under the same basic design principles as when they were first invented 125 years ago. The energy to operate an electric motor each year can cost 20 times more than the initial price of the motor. Therefore, the relatively small increased cost for a premium efficiency motor is easily paid for in only a few months of operation.

This equates to a return on investment of over 125% each and every year of operation! But the environment also wins, because the same motor creates about 20% less waste energy. This in turn means that fewer new coal-fired plants have to be built, putting fewer hydrocarbons into the air we breathe.

Brithinee Electric strongly supports NEMA premium motor usage by maintaining one of the largest premium motor inventories in the Inland Empire and Southern California. When motors fail, they must be replaced immediately to keep factories or pumps working. Having a large inventory allows a quick decision to be made in favor of premium motors. "This is a commitment as much to the environment as to selling more motors, because our inventory is really larger than the profit return might justify. But it is one way we can help support good motor decisions that are better for the environment." says Wallace Brithinee.

Other issues of importance are the way that motors are controlled. Large motors don't just turn on and off with a switch; they are controlled with variable speed drives (industry language for computerized control of motor performance) that increase efficiency while saving power and wear and tear on the motor. Brithinee Electric builds custom control panel systems that adhere to high standards for safety and motor efficiency.

"Strong energy savings can be realized through good control systems," says Don Brithinee, "augmenting the savings from premium motors. Our Motor/Environment Initiative is a long-term effort to get both the plant manager who buys the motors, and the controller who pays the electrical power bills to work together on budgeting - both capital and repair costs, as well as current energy costs/savings …a long term strategy for motors will help the environment."

Redlands Conservancy Tour and Taste Dinner - May 7, 2006

What: Redlands Conservancy Tour and Taste Dinner
When: Sunday, May 7, 6pm
Where: Historic home in Redlands
Contact: Sherli Leonard, (909) 389-7810; sleonard@keyway.net

Redlands claims a plethora of important historic homes, but it has only two founders: Judson and Brown. It stands to reason, then, that Redlands has only two homes at the top of the "MIH" (Most Important Home) list.

The Redlands Conservancy has scheduled its final Tour and Taste Dinner for the season at one of these homes, the home of Edward R. Judson, co-founder and first mayor of the City of Redlands. Today, the home is held in the loving hands of Dr. Murray and Karen Brandstater.

The Tour and Taste Dinner, "A Symphony for the Palate," will be held on Sunday, May 7 at 6pm for a very limited seating. Reservations, which include a five-course gourmet dinner with wines from Bob Kirkland of Gerrards Market, a guided tour of the home, and petite souvenirs, cost $75 per person. This is a "fun-raising" event for the Redlands Conservancy's Historic Preservation Program projects such as the Marten Andersen House Relocation and Renovation Project.

The "chef de nuit" will be the highly sought-after Walter Collins, Executive Director for the Redlands Symphony Orchestra. According to Karen Brandstater, Collins' has prepared many dinners as fundraisers for the annual Symphony Gala, and the dinners "sold for thousands of dollars."

Chef Collins will prepare appetizers to accompany Kirkland-selected champagne, which guests will enjoy as they gather for the pre-dinner tour. When guests are seated, Chef Collins will guide them through a soup course, salad, entre, and dessert. Reserving the right to remain vague, and appreciating the insecurity of availability of specific food items, Chef Collins holds us in suspense about the exact menu.

Brandstater, however, has much to say about the house which Judson built in 1887, according to her research. She and her husband have owned the home for 22 years, having purchased it from Redlands architect Leon Armantrout who apparently purchased it from D.J. Stewart who had owned it for 45 years.

"The home's condition had declined, as it had been loved but somewhat neglected," said Brandstater. She and her husband took on the project, armed with considerable experience with old homes.

"We had preserved an 1869 stone farm house in Canada, under the guidance of a renowned restoration architect, so we had a pretty good handle on what to expect," Brandstater said.

They took out 23 dumpsters of trash, including overgrown brush and garden junk, and added a 750 square foot breakfast room, staying true to the style and materials of the house. In 1992, they added a carriage house with garage and 1,100 square foot unfinished second floor. It blends so well with the house that most passers-by would believe it was built with the house.

Brandstater said the home turned into a boarding facility during the Depression, and all the original lighting fixtures were taken then. However, a beautiful built-in buffet survived, along with four fireplaces and a library. She calls her kitchen a "vintage" kitchen.

"We truly have enjoyed restoring this home," she said. "It has been a labor of love."

To make reservations for the Tour and Taste Dinner at the Brandstater home, please call (909) 792-1800. For more information, visit the Web site at http://www.redlandsconservancy.org/.

Police Department offers Internet safety training

Monday, April 17, 2006
Police Department offers Internet safety training
Courses designed to help families safely navigate online sites such as MySpace.com

Parents and the community at large have become increasingly alarmed by reports of sexual predators who prowl online networking sites, such as MySpace.com, seeking to connect with naive or unwary children and young teens.
Recent arrests in Redlands, as well as other communities, and media reports have lent credence to their misgivings as pedophiles use the Internet to gain the trust of teens and arrange to meet them face to face.
"In the last six months, we've had several cases where teen-agers and adults have met online," says Redlands Police Detective Rachel Kelly.
In order to better investigate such activity and work proactively to prevent victimization of young teens, the Redlands Police Department has joined the regional Internet Crime Against Children task force.
The danger of vulnerable teens surfing the web, where they can be preyed upon by sexual predators is real, but with proper caution and supervision, the Internet can be a powerful and safe tool for the whole family.
"We need to be proactive about teaching our youth how to use a really great tool in a safe way," Kelly points out.
Parents, grandparents, caregivers and educators of young teens should become aware not only of the potential perils of Internet social networking sites but also the precautions they can take to ensure the safety and security of the web.
"You wouldn't let your child receive mail or packages from strangers unsupervised," says Redlands Police Investigator Aneta Deutscher.
"Why would you let them get on the Internet unsupervised?" "You need to control your kids' computer just like you would control any other environment they're in," agrees Lori Cooper, an investigator in the department's High-Tech Crime Unit.
The Redlands Police Department has scheduled a series of Internet Safety Classes to provide community members with the information and tools necessary to ensure a safe online experience for their families.
"I think a lot of parents are intimidated because they're not tech-savvy," says Cooper. "They rely on their kids to tell them what they're doing. But it’s not that difficult to get online and familiarize yourself with sites like MySpace.”
The 90-minute classes will be taught by members of the Redlands Police Department's High-Tech Crime Unit and Investigative Bureau and will include information about sites such as MySpace.com, how parents and others can increase their awareness of children's online activity, and tools, such as filtering software, that can help ensure the safety and security of home computers.
"The children of our community are its most valuable asset and the RPD is committed to their safety" said Redlands Police Chief Jim Bueermann.
"Parents whose adolescence did not include personal computers – much less social networking sites such as MySpace.com – need the information and the skills this course provides to help ensure the safety of their children in today's Internet-intensive world." Classes are scheduled at three separate dates and locations:
Saturday, May 20, at 10:30 a.m., at the Redlands Community Center, 111 E. Lugonia Ave.
Tuesday, May 23, at 6 p.m. at the Redlands Police Department, 212 Brookside Ave.
Tuesday, May 25, at 6 p.m. at the Joslyn Senior Center Conference Room, 21 Grant St.The classes are free but space is limited. To register, contact Sherri Hunt at (909) 798-7659, ext. 0, Tuesdays through Fridays, or e-mail shunt@redlandspolice.org.

Ed Hales Park at the Corner of 5th and State

"Mr. Planning Commission"-that's what they used to call Ed Hales. Most Redlanders have spent some time in the park on the corner of State and Fifth Street. I myself park my bike there when visiting downtown Redlands, right below those silly old soap signs. But Ed Hales Park is more than just a nice place to relax in downtown Redlands; it represents a piece of town history that even Mr. Planning Commission himself could not have anticipated.

The Chandler building occupied the corner of 101 E. State St. from 1902 to 1972. The Chandler building stood a decorative three-story structure with elaborate architecture and many windows. However, in 1972 it was torn down for being a fire and earthquake hazard. Nathan Gonzalez, associated archivest at A.K. Smiley Library, said that the Chandler building may have been the tallest building in Redlands before it's destruction in 1972. Originally, it housed the Redlands' post office on the first floor, and then businesses on the second and third floors. Over time, Guy Chandler's carpeting company occupied the entire building, and eventually the building was named for him.

The building lay vacant for 6 years before the city demolished it, in favor of putting a park in its place. However, upon the demolition of the Chandler building unexpected soap advertisements were revealed, shedding light on marketing campaigns that had been covered for over 70 years.

Ed Hales park and those historic soap signs stand as a monument to the
"old time" feel that Redlands has been able to maintain with the help of city leaders like Ed Hales, who sought to preserve a piece of our past. Next time you're listening to a band play at Market Night take a moment to look to your right and appreciate the history of that particular space.

The Inland Empire Still the Economic Powerhouse of California

At the Inland Empire's 8th Annual Business Press Economic Briefing on Tuesday, April 4th, 2006, John Husing reported on his annual Economic Briefing hosted by The Business Press. The event was held at the Ontario Convention Center.

Husing reported on current and recent economic and job market conditions and trends and made predictions for the rest of 2006. The statistics and forecasts focus on the Inland Empire and Southern California, but include the entire state of California as well as the rest of the country.

In terms of the United States as a whole, the GDP is expected to return to the level it was at prior to Hurricane Katrina, while short and long interest curves rise at a fairly equal rate and high oil prices continue to be an issue.

Southern California's economy is stronger than the state as a whole, thanks in part to the IE! The Inland Empire has not only had no period of job loss, but has accounted for 46% of the jobs in Southern California in the last fifteen years. In 2004 alone, the IE was responsible for 22% of jobs in all of California, and the 2005 gain was the second highest in history. Also, due to higher-end housing, there has been an increase of residents with a higher education.

Making sure to address both forecast risks and long term issues for last year and this year, the prediction for the rest of 2006 suggests that there is an expected job growth of 46, 200 jobs, with a 3.7% growth rate. Mr. Husing's presentation is not available as of this writing, but was stated it would be available at www.johnhusing.com.

The event was the 8th annual Business Press Economic Briefing, sponsored by PFF Bank and Trust, Account Temps, Brithinee Electric, Soren McAdam Christenson LLP, and Arrowhead Credit Union, among others.
