How the Inland Empire Got Its Name

The "Inland Empire" of Southern California is the unofficial name of the area adjacent to, and inland from, the Los Angeles and Orange Counties. Previously referred to as the Orange Empire for the area's historical orange groves and industry, the term "Inland Empire" was coined in the 1950's in order to make a distinction between this area and the large, coastal regions, especially Los Angeles. Since the I.E. is not a formal name of the area, there are no proper boundaries, although the San Gabriel Mountains are often used as a starting point. Located about fifty miles from the coast, an "inland" empire was born.

But why "empire?" By definition, the word empire usually indicates a political nature. However, it is a word that also elicits thoughts of size, grandeur, abundance, and productivity. Beginning with its orange industry and growing into the thriving metropolitan area it is today, the IE is often associated with such attributes. Comprised mainly of the San Bernardino and Riverside Counties, the Inland Empire includes over 35 cities, such as Chino, Ontario, Rancho Cucamonga, Loma Linda, Redlands, Riverside, and Corona, among many others. The Inland Empire is not only the second largest region in California, but is also in the top twelve of the entire United States.

Finding Fine Art in the Inland Empire

Shirley Harry, art lover and owner of the EOS Gallery, works hard to bring fine art to the Inland Empire. Artists from all over the world send her portfolios of items to be shown at the EOS Gallery located in Redlands, California. The gallery is currently featuring artist Roberta Thole, who brings a textural style to classical subject matter. Shirley often travels to New York City to experience the diversity of high-quality art featured in museums like the Guggenheim and Metropolitan. Shirley says many factors are involved making high-quality art: technique, finish, design, and subject matter, but that the most important thing in art is the emotion it evokes in the viewer. Shirley says, "Good artists have something to say." The EOS Gallery offers an opportunity to come and enjoy fine art that was created by professional artists. "Many times," says Shirley, "artists are forced, unfortunately, to have supplemental jobs…these artists are people who have chosen art as a profession." The EOS Gallery is a great opportunity to experience fine art in Redlands and the Inland Empire.

Museum Day Trip to Barstow Fossil Beds

Redlands, CA - Curators from the San Bernardino County Museum's Division of Geological Sciences will lead a full-day trip to Barstow, California, to see the world-famous Barstow Fossil Beds. The trip, open to the public with pre-registration, will leave the museum at 7:00 a.m. and return at 6:00 p.m. The cost of $60 per person ($50 for members of the Museum Association) includes transportation from the museum, coffee and muffins, lunch, snacks, and water.

The Barstow Fossil Beds are a treasure trove of vertebrate and invertebrate fossils dating back to the middle Miocene Epoch, 16 million - 13 million years ago. The site is renowned for the abundance and excellent preservation of the fossils found therein. Fossils from this site include giant carnivorous "bear-dogs," saber-toothed cats, three-toed horses, and several kinds of camels.

"These fossils are so important that the Barstow Fossil Beds have been designated the type locality for the Barstovian North American Land Mammal Age, a period of geologic time recognized throughout North America," said Kathleen Springer, senior curator of the museum's division of geological sciences.

Field trip leaders Springer, Curator of Paleontology Eric Scott, and Curator of Geology J. Chris Sagebiel will lead trip participants through the spectacular Rainbow Basin National Natural Landmark and surrounding areas. The curators will discuss the fossils, their importance, and the colorful rocks that hold them, emphasizing the importance of relating fossils to their geologic context. "The Barstow Fossil Beds are a unique resource," said Springer. "The abundance and diversity of fossils, as well as the ability to date them precisely, make this site truly extraordinary."

Pre-registration is required for this day trip, and space is limited. Reservations will be taken in order of receipt but no later than February 20. For more information and a registration form, visit http://www.sbcountymuseum.org/ or call the San Bernardino County Museum Association at (909) 307-2669 ext. 225. Inland Empire Manufacturers' Council Partners with RedFusion Media to Extend Services

Redlands, CA: The Inland Empire Manufacturers' Council (IVMC) has just completed an agreement with RedFusion Media of Redlands to build its website and an extended industrial and manufacturing directory in its regional directory website, InlandEmpire.US.

The IVMC is a membership-based, non-profit association for manufacturers in the Inland Empire. The mission of IVMC is to improve, increase, and enhance manufacturing within the Inland Empire. IVMC members network to share ideas and best practices in manufacturing. It also is strives to empower the organized voice of manufacturers. The members of the council interface with state and local government representatives, participate in educational programs, and host meetings to assist manufacturers to improve efficiencies and profitability.

The partnership with InlandEmpire.US will enhance IVMC membership by creating a sourcing directory for local suppliers and materials, and provide relevant linking opportunities to member websites, plus links to the IVMC website, as a recruiting tool for the organization. Members include: Portland Cement, Farmdale Creamery, Brithinee Electric, Garner Holt Productions, Quell Brothers' Sign Company, Williams Furnace Company, and Magneto Inductive Systems. The full membership is available on its website: http://www.ivmc.us/members.html.

InlandEmpire.US is devoted to creating the region's largest directory of businesses and events in Inland Southern California. The InlandEmpire.US network of local and regional websites expect over 1.5 million page views this year. Currently traffic is increasing at a 30% per month rate.

"We are pleased to partner with the IVMC in this way to create a local presence in the manufacturing sector for the Inland Empire,'" says Molly Burgess, general manager of RedFusion Media." Since PE.net shut down its site last spring, the IE has had no dominant local directory for reference or events. Because we manage so many websites that contribute to the community, we also wanted a place where we could gather Google ranking through relevant linking programs. Linking opportunities that help websites increase their Google ranking are difficult for webmasters to find, and are not usually understood by most webmasters. We have had very good success with these types of programs, without it costing the market rate of about $100 per page, for search engine optimization on websites," says Burgess.

IVMC hopes that its involvement in sponsoring the manufacturing directory, will assist its member websites, and do a service to the Inland Empire as well. "We're excited to be in on the ground floor of such an innovative program," says IVMC president Bob Botts. "We needed a website, but didn't expect to learn of some of the opportunities available locally with RedFusion Media."

If you are a manufacturer, you can learn more about the IVMC at www.IVMC.US. The new manufacturing directory will be completed by January 10, 2006 and can be found in the Business section of InlandEmpire.US.

RedFusion Media is the leading web design and content maintenance firm in the Inland Empire. Based in Redlands, it maintains over 200 websites for clients such as San Bernardino County Museum, the City of Redlands, ROP, Arrowhead United Way and the Air-conditioning, Refrigeration and Mechanical Contractors' Association of Southern California (ARCA/MCA). RedFusion Media operates the local directory sites: InlandEmpire.US, RedlandsWeb.com, and RedlandsWeddings.com.
