Resource center provides free school supplies
Rancho Cucamonga, CA - From 12 - 2 p.m. on Tuesday, August 22, more than 200 local company executives, city officials, teachers, school administrators, donors, and program partners will celebrate the grand opening of the Inland Empire United Way's School Tools Teacher Resource Center. Located at 9644 Hermosa Ave. in Rancho Cucamonga, the resource center provides eligible schools with free school supplies in a retail-like setting.
"We are excited to launch the program and begin getting school supplies out to disadvantaged kids who need them," said Lorraine Ousley, KidSmart Director. "If 85,000 children in our United Way service area can't afford lunch, then it is unlikely they can afford school supplies. School Tools exists to give every child in our community an opportunity to learn and succeed."
Following the 12:30 p.m. ribbon cutting conducted by the Rancho Cucamonga Chamber, the celebration includes appearances from Rancho Cucamonga Quakes' mascot, Tremor, and the Chick-fil-A cow. Chick-fil-A of Ontario Mills Parkway will donate lunch. Community members are encouraged to bring new school supplies to 'Stuff the Truck.' UPS has donated a truck for the day, and all the donated supplies will be distributed to low-income students.
Following the grand opening, teachers from five Fontana elementary schools will collect free supplies for their students. This group is the first invited to participate, but as the program grows and resources allow, other eligible schools will be invited to receive supplies. Eligible schools have 70% or more students enrolled in the federal free and reduced meal program.
