Esther at the LifeHouse Theater in Redlands, CA

JOURNEY BACK TO ANCIENT PERSIA...and join the courageous Queen Esther as she outwits the evil and treacherous Haman in this hilarious musical version of the beloved biblical story. Experience the intrigue, follies, and foibles of one of the most powerful empires of history in this tale based on the true story of a young Jewish woman who rises to the Persian throne.

OPENING NIGHT: Saturday, October 22 at 7:30
PERFORMANCES: October 23 - November 12, 2005
Friday: 7:30, Saturday: 2:15 and 7:30, Sunday: 2:15
Additional weekday performance Thursday, November 10, 7:30 PM

The Story Behind The Story
We continue our twelfth season with an audience favorite – our light rendition of a serious story as timely today as ever. First presented in 1989, our musical biography of Queen Esther traces amazing true events recorded in the biblical text bearing her name and corresponding with Herodotus' Histories and the recent archeological discovery of the Persian palace where Esther rose to prominence.

When Winston Churchill mobilized Britain against Hitler, he wrote in his journal, “I felt as if I were walking with Destiny, and that all my past life had been but a preparation for this hour and for this trial.” History tells us that Hitler was not the first to attempt the extermination of all Jewish people. A conniving politician named Haman sought to implement history's first holocaust. He was thwarted by Esther's appointment with Destiny. Like Churchill, her whole life had been “but a preparation for this hour and for this trial.”

While winning a beauty pageant and the heart of King Xerxes, Esther rises from the humdrum life of an orphan to a luxurious life as queen to one of the most powerful men in the world. Heeding the wise advice of her cousin Mordecai, she courageously risks her own life to save her people – securing her place in honor as a heroine in the history of Israel.

Mordecai's reminder to Esther is also a reminder to us: “You have come to the kingdom for such a time as this” (Es. 4:14). And while the Book of Esther is the only biblical book that does not mention the name of God, Esther's availability to the prompting of unseen Providence and the amazing deliverance of her people are evidence that the tapestry of history is woven by a divine Weaver.

May we be inspired by the courage and conviction of a brave young woman who sought to do the right thing and to make a difference – regardless of the cost to herself.

Be sure to join us next for the premiere of our heartwarming new musical “Miracle on 34 th Street.” We look forward to sharing many memorable adventures with you in the season ahead!

San Bernardino County Museum Discovers Extinct Frog

MUSEUM DISCOVERS "EXTINCT" FROG

Michael Rathbun, a San Bernardino County Museum professional biologist, recently located rare and endangered Mountain Yellow-legged Frogs in City Creek, near Highland, California. The frog, an endangered species, had been declared extinct in City Creek following the 2003 fires.

The City Creek habitat supported one of the few known populations of this frog species. When the area was burned over in 2003, surviving frogs were relocated to the Los Angeles Zoo on the advice of the U.S. Geological Survey, Biological Resources Division. The frogs became infected with the parasite Chytrid while in captivity, and could not be released back into the wild.

The USGS Biological Resources Division surveyed the burned area of City Creek in 2004 and 2005. Failing to locate the frog, it was declared extinct in the City Creek Habitat.

On September 9, while conducting a study of Willow Flycatcher habitat suitability for the San Bernardino National Forest, Rathbun rediscovered Mountain Yellow-legged Frogs in City Creek. "I saw two Rana muscosa around 9:15 a.m. as they jumped into the water," he said, "and I was able to photograph them when they emerged." The frogs were found in the same location as the pre-fire populations and in the same area surveyed by the USGS Biological Resources Division. Follow-up visits by the Forest Service confirmed Rathbun's rediscovery.

"There have been Mountain Yellow-legged Frogs, fires, and floods in the San Bernardino Mountains for millennia,” said Gerald Braden, museum biological sciences curator and research biologist, "and yet the frogs are still there. This points out that well-meaning intervention in a natural habitat isn't necessarily the best way to "save" a species. Mike's rediscovery of the Mountain Yellow-legged Frog in City Creek came from his comprehensive biological field expertise and ability to discriminate and identify the species among thousands of Hyla cadaverina, the California Tree Frog. It points to the need for more accurate endangered species survey techniques and more importantly, the need for a better understanding of the ecological relationships of endangered species and their habitats. The museum's finding of an "extinct" endangered species also has implications toward Critical Habitat for the Mountain Yellow-legged Frog as proposed by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service."

The San Bernardino County Museum is at the California Street exit from Interstate 10 in Redlands. The museum is open Tuesdays through Sundays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. General admission is $6 (adult), $5 (student or senior), and $4 (child aged 5 to 12).
