“Last year’s L’Etape du California was received with so much enthusiasm, we knew we had to do it again in 2012,” said Kristin Bachochin, executive director of the Amgen Tour of California. “We have such passionate cycling fans in America, and here in California in particular, so it only makes sense to host this event in conjunction with our race.
Fontana, California, November 22, 2011. The Mayor and City Council invite the public to attend upcoming events taking place at the Mary Vagle Nature Center this December.

If you or your family has never had the pleasure of visiting the Mary Vagle Nature Center, this December is the perfect month to get introduced. On Saturday, December 10th from noon to 5 p.m. the center will be hosting its Holiday Open House. The day will be filled with fun activities for the whole family, including seasonal nature crafts, face painting and live animal demonstrations that are completely FREE.

“Winter is a great month to be outside in southern California’s parks and natural areas. Migrant winter birds, only seen in winter, show up, and many of our native plants begin to bloom,” said Rick Dean, Community Services Coordinator for the Nature Center.

So come on by to experience the out of doors in our pleasant California winter! There will also be several reoccurring weekend programs offered at the Center.

For parents with children between the ages of three and six, satisfy their curiosity with the weekend program Adventure into Nature. Your little adventurers will enjoy quests that include a nature walk, hands on crafts and live animal displays. This event will be offered on Saturday, December 10th at noon and will continuously be offered the second Saturday of each month. The cost is only $3 per child.

If you are looking to get a natural workout join the Nature Center’s Discovery Hike on Saturday, December 3rd at 9:30 a.m., where you will enjoy a guided hike in the Jurupa Hills. This event, which occurs on the first Saturday of the month, is free and open to all ages. Minors must be accompanied by an adult.

Nature Rangers is another exciting free weekend program. Here families and children ages seven and older can enjoy performing fun outdoor investigations. Guided by a naturalist, children will get to use binoculars, magnifying glasses and other scientific tools to investigate the park area and pond, looking for everything from turtles to insects. In addition, they will meet some of the Nature Center’s collection of live animals. If you want to participate in this exploration join them on Saturday, December 17th at noon, or every third Saturday of the month.

The Mary Vagle Nature Center is located at 11501 Cypress Avenue in Fontana and is open Wednesday through Sunday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. For more information about events at the Mary Vagle Nature Center, please call the Center at (909) 349-6994 or visit their website at nature.fontana.org.

Festival admission is $8 (adult), $7 (senior and military), $6 (student), and $4 (child 5 to 12). Children under 5 and Museum Association members are admitted free.

The festival kicks off on Friday, November 18 between 6 and 9:00 p.m. with “An Evening with the Artists.” This year’s reception will recall adventures in the great outdoors, with décor by Bass Pro Shops and guests invited to dress in Outdoor Adventure-wear. The party, which includes the introduction of Joe Hautman, this year’s Federal Duck Stamp competition winner, is open to the public. The cost for the event is $20/person, with Museum Association members $10/person and festival sponsors invited at no cost. Reservations are required.

The festival includes an exhibit of the top entries from this year’s Federal Duck Stamp competition and entries from the Junior Duck Stamp contest. Children’s art is also represented by classroom and family projects for the Tom Bennett Children’s Art and Environmental Science Competition. Family Fun Day activities centered around art and the natural world are scheduled on both days of the festival. Guests can also enjoy a “Pick-a-Prize” opportunity drawing featuring nearly two dozen prizes.

Festival History

The Wildlife Art Festival began when top paintings from the Federal Duck Stamp Contest were first shown on the West Coast in 1983 at the San BernardinoCounty Museum. The festival has grown and evolved over the years while maintaining its focus on conservation and the natural world. Twenty-nine years ago, the event was called the “Waterfowl West Festival,” and art works featured water birds. As more artists sought to enter their works in the festival, a wider range of wildlife paintings was accepted into the event. This year, participating artists will show subject matters related to the natural world.

Festival Artists

Since 1987, a Featured Artist has been selected annually to produce a work of art as a signature piece for that year’s event. This year, Rob Sutton from San Dimas, California will present a painting created especially for the festival, “Firehole Magic.” Sutton stated, “Drawn to the vastness of the landscape and the incredible critters that inhabit it, my vision as a wildlife artist is to unite these two elements into cohesive, balanced compositions that breaths life into any room that they are hung. I believe this is best done through the pushing of color, form, and texture, while keeping the anatomy of the painting truthful to the wildlife and environment being represented. I am most intrigued by North America’s big game but find that I will paint just about anything that moves. Realistic representation is critical to me although I have little desire to paint every hair.”

Other participating artists are Clifford Barnes (Burbank), Keith Batcheller (San Dimas), Ray Brown (Lake Forest), Circe (Fullerton), Pat Gilmore (Vista), Carol Heiman-Greene (Orange), Gary Johnson (Encinitas), Penny Krebs (Morongo Valley), Lee Kromschroeder (Escondido), Arlene Rheinish (Trabuco Canyon), Dennis Schroeder (Junction City), Robert Steiner (San Francisco), Pam Stoehsler (Klamath Falls), and Dennis Zervas (Lake Forest).

Family Programs

The Wildlife Art Festival is designed for adults and children with museum education division programs and the Tom Bennett Children’s Art and Environmental Science competition, during which students learn about wildlife habitats. This year’s theme is “Wetlands Conservation.”

Wetlands are important habitats for wildlife, the plants they depend on, and people. They provide free essential services including filtering water, modulating the influence of storms by buffering land from floods and water surges, and providing nursery and lifecycle habitat for countless mammals, birds, fish, amphibians, crustaceans, insects and more. Wetlands have been eliminated for development and flood control across the state, leaving people to seek alternative — and expensive — solutions to the benefits that wetlands provided for free.

On Saturday from 9am to 5pm and Sunday from 9am to 4pm, the museum’s education division will organize a variety of hands-on art experiences for children and families using paint and natural materials, and the Ramona-Country Carvers will provide hands-on instruction in carving. These activities are included with paid museum admission. Artist Trudy Wood will teach drawing and pastel classes for children 9 to 15 years old. These hour-long classes cost $5 per session; seating is limited.

Federal Duck Stamp Story

The top entries from the Federal Duck Stamp art competition will be exhibited at the museum during the festival. This year, Joe Hautman of Minnesota won the contest with his painting of a wood duck. Hautman will be at the festival to meet museum visitors on Friday evening, Saturday, and Sunday.

“Duck Stamps” are not postage stamps; they are revenue stamps called the Federal Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamp purchased by waterfowl hunters to validate their hunting licenses each year. The proceeds from stamp sales are the single largest source of funding for wetlands habitat conservation and enhancement. The stamp design, new each year, is chosen through a prestigious, federally-sponsored art contest. This year’s winner will be selected in late October. He or she will meet with festival visitors on Friday evening, Saturday, and Sunday.

Since 1934, the “Duck Stamp” program has raised $770 million to preserve wetlands acres within 186 national wildlife refuges. These refuges are used by one-third of our threatened and endangered species, two-thirds of our most important commercial and sporting species of marine fish, and songbirds, shorebirds, and countless other species. Birdwatchers, photographers, fishermen, and others who enjoy wildlife can contribute to the conservation of wildlife habitat by purchasing Duck Stamps at most post offices, wildlife refuges, and many licensed hunting retail stores.

Festival Sponsors

The Wildlife Art Festival is organized by the San Bernardino County Museum Association with platinum sponsorship from the James Ramos Family. Other festival sponsors include Macy’s, Bass Pro Shops, Beaver Medical Group, John Biddick and Associates, PrintProPlus.com, the San Bernardino County Fish and Game Commission, James and Marguerite Glaze, Ted and Jo Dutton, Lewis Brisbois Bisgaard and Smith LLP, Ayers Hotel Redlands, the Ramona-Country Carvers, Century 21 Lois Lauer Realty, and Wiens Family Cellars.

Museum Information

The San Bernardino County Museum is at the California Street exit from Interstate 10 in Redlands. Admission is $8 (adult), $6 (military or senior), $5 (student) and $4 (child aged 5 to 12). Children under five and Museum Association members are admitted free. Parking is free. For more information, visit www.sbcountymuseum.org or call (909) 307-2669.

The museum is accessible to persons with disabilities. If assistive listening devices or other auxiliary aids are needed in order to participate in museum exhibits or programs, requests should be made through Museum Visitor Services at least three business days prior to your visit. Visitor Services’ telephone number is (909) 307-2669 ext. 229 or TDD (909) 792-1462.

The Department of Theatre at the University of California, Riverside, is pleased to present DETAINED IN THE DESERT, a play by Josefina Lopez, writer of the award-winning film Real Women Have Curves.

The play tells the stories of Sandi Sanchez, a second-generation Hispanic American, and Lou Becker, a “Hate Talk” radio show host. In converging stories, Sandi is arrested as an “illegal immigrant” when, in protest to the new Arizona law, she refuses to show her identification and Lou is kidnapped by three people who want to avenge a murder caused by his hate speech. Both Sandi and Lou end up in the desert and in their struggles to survive they discover their true identities and come to understand the plight of undocumented immigrants crossing the border.

While Lopez wrote DETAINED IN THE DESERT in response to the Arizona’s law SB 1070, she also wanted to explore the motives behind hate speech. “I wonder if the men at the forefront of this ‘hate talk’ and fear of immigration are aware that they have blood on their hands. They have a right to freedom of speech but they must realize that spreading hate causes more hate.” In this play we learn that words have power, they can hurt or they can heal.

Linking the stories of characters with different relationships to citizenship creates a richly-dramatic evening of theatre and encourages audiences to think about the politics of immigration and their own views on the subject. In DETAINED IN THE DESERT, Josephina Lopez has shone a light on this important issue that touches the lives of every citizen of California and of the country.

JOSEFINA LOPEZ (Playwright) is the award-winning writer of the Sundance Audience Award-winning film Real Women Have Curves. She is a playwright, screenwriter, poet and novelist. She is the founder of CASA 0101 Theater where she presents plays, film festivals, and teaches and empowers a new generation of Latino and women writers. She is currently working on the musical version of Real Women Have Curves for Broadway and on her next novel The Ave Maria Bed & Breakfast, which explores the different stages of womanhood and the influx of Anglo-Americans in Mexico and South America.
Benedict Castle Holiday of Light

The eighteenth annual Benedict Castle Christmas Holiday of Light will be held on November 27, 2011 from 6 to 8 P.M, at5445 Chicago Ave, Riverside CA(951-682-8990). This open house is free to the public and features the exterior lighting of the Castle and the beautiful interior decorations designed by members of the Teen Challenge Ladies Guild. In addition, there is a live Nativity; Christmas Carols sung by a Dickens Choir and the Teen Challenge Choir and played on the Castle’s rare Kilgon pipe organ (the last of the original furnishings) will entertain the public. Castle tours will run every 20minutes. All are invited to purchase a cappuccino, Hot Chocolate or Gourmet Apple.

Charles Benedict began construction of Benedict Castle in 1922 after he and his second wife Carlotta toured Alhambra Castlein Granada, Spain while on their honeymoon. Many of the features of the castle were taken directly from Alhambra Castle. Construction stopped after the two were divorced and began again in 1926 when he married his third wife Louise Potter. The break in construction allowed the castle to be completed using new construction methods. As a result the front part of the $300,000 castle is constructed of adobe bricks while the back portion is built of re-enforced concrete. The 10,000 foot residence hosted flamboyant parties with friends like Frank Miller (builder of the historic Mission Inn) and Jack Warner of Warner Brothers. Benedict died in 1938 and his wife lived in the residence until 1952 when it was sold to Riverside businessmen for $52,000.

For three years the Castle became the setting for a variety of social events until it was sold to the Servite Order of the Catholic Church for use as a Seminary. Dramatic steps were taken during the Sixties when the Servite Fathers opened the Castle doors to the public for art festivals, musical programs, social and fund raising events. They even allowed the filming of suchHollywoodmovies as Hunchback of Notre Dame, Bride of Frankenstein, Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein and Two On A Guillotine with Connie Stevens.

In 1971, the Servite Fathers sold the Castle to Teen Challenge who continues to use the Castle for fund raising, social gatherings (such as weddings and banquets) and the Christmas Lighting Open House.

Teen Challenge of Southern California is part of an international Christian program providing cost free assistance to people with life controlling problems. Started inNew Yorkin 1958, Teen Challenge has grown to become the largest non-profit charitable endeavor of its kind with 360 centers in 70 countries. Each center independently supports itself through donations and work projects. Additionally they provide community service by cleaning the Veterans Cemetery and working at the Riverside Community Events.

The Christmas decorations are donated and are put up each year for the men’s Christmas party hosted by the Ladies Guild. For many of the men in the Teen Challenge program the Ladies Guild Christmas party is an emotional event as they have not celebrated Christmas for many years and they greatly appreciate the gifts that the ladies acquire through donations. The Benedict Castle Holiday of Light event grew out of this yearly Christmas event.

Programs will begin at noon, 1:00, 2:00, and 3:00 p.m. and last about one-half hour. The programs are free with paid museum admission. “The stars bring people together,” said Jolene Redvale, curator of education. “From anywhere in the northern hemisphere, everyone sees pretty much the same stars. And, if you watch throughout the season, you’ll see how the stars appear to move across the sky. In times past, people use these patterns and apparent motions to mark events throughout the year, and to navigate from place to place.” StarLab programs recommended for families with children over age 4. The Victor Valley Museum is at 11873 Apple Valley Road in Apple Valley. Admission is $5 (adult), $4 (senior or military), and $2.50 (student). Children under 5 and San Bernardino County Museum Association members are free. Parking is free. For more information, visit www.sbcountymuseum.org. The museum is accessible to persons with disabilities. All money raised will benefit the local Chapter and help grant more wishes for children in our local community, like 17-year-old Donald of Corona.

Donald, who was diagnosed with leukemia a few years ago, recently had a wish granted to have his ’65 Mustang restored. The crew at Barry’s Speed Shop in Corona partnered with Make-A-Wish to help make this happen. After a lot of hard work and late nights, Donald’s Mustang was finally finished. As the shiny, metallic gray car was unveiled, the smile on Donald’s face grew wider and wider.

Donald is one of more than 300 local kids who will have a wish granted this year through the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Orange County and the Inland Empire. In order for this to happen, the Chapter relies on support from community fundraising efforts, like that of The Shops at Dos Lagos led by marketing manager Heather Bordner-Ayyob.

The Shops at Dos Lagos is located at 2780 Cabot Drive, Suite 140 in Corona.
